A search leads you to a thread that has the answer to your problem. The page shows the first two replies and then asks you to register. You have no interest in the community, only in the third reply.
This is one of the most common reasons people reach for a disposable address, and it is mostly a good use of one, with a specific exception worth knowing.
Why forums do it
Spam control. Requiring a verified address raises the cost of creating accounts. It works, up to a point.
Membership numbers. Registered users are the metric a forum reports and often sells against.
Search traffic conversion. People arriving from a search engine are the largest source of new members, and the moment they need an answer is when they are most likely to sign up.
None of these require your address to remain valid afterwards. The forum wanted a registration, and it got one.
When a disposable address is right
You came from a search, you want one specific answer, and you will not be back. You are not going to post, follow anyone, or receive replies.
Register with a disposable address, confirm, read the answer, close the tab. The account remains in their database, quietly, and neither party needs anything further from the other.
When it is a mistake
If you are going to ask a question. Somebody will answer, the forum will notify you at the address you registered, and by then the address will be gone. Worse, replies often arrive over several days, and you will not see any of them.
If you might contribute more than once. Losing access means registering again under a new name, which most communities dislike, and starting from zero reputation.
If reputation matters. Professional and technical communities are places where a long standing account with a history has real value. Do not build that on an address that expires tonight.
If the community is worth being part of. This one is easy to miss in the moment. You arrived for one answer, but a good community is worth an alias.
The practical test
Ask whether you want to be notified of a reply. If yes, use something permanent. If no, a disposable address is exactly right.
That test also handles the middle case cleanly: registering to read is fine with a throwaway address, registering to participate is not.
If you registered and then wanted to stay
The fix is the same as everywhere else, and it must happen before the mailbox expires. Sign in, open the profile settings, change the address to a permanent one, and complete whatever confirmation the forum sends. After that the account is safe and your history is preserved.
Leaving it until you next visit, weeks later, is how people end up with an account they can read but never recover, sitting behind a password they have forgotten and an address that no longer exists.
